Friday, February 9th

Dean of Academics Thanks You!

Eclipse
On April 8, 2024 we will experience a total solar eclipse. Glasses have been purchased for the entire school. NASA's schedule for the Dallas area follows:
Partial Begins: 12:23 pm
Totality Begins: 1:40 pm
Maximum: 1:42 pm
Totality Ends: 1:44 pm
Partial Ends: 3:02 pm

We will send out more details about that day, if you want to take your classes outside during the eclipse but here are some safety tips to read over!

Safety Tips for Viewing the Solar Eclipse
  • The only way to safely look directly at an eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand held solar viewers. To date four manufacturers have certified that their eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for such products: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.
  • Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched or damaged, discard it. Read and follow any instructions on or packaged with filter.
  • Always supervise children using eclipse glasses and solar filters.
  • Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the sun. After glancing at the eclipsed sun, turn away and remove your filter –do not remove it while looking at the eclipsed sun.
  • Do not look at the eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device. Similarly, do not look at the eclipsed sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand held solar viewer –the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.
  • Sunglasses are never a substitute for eclipse glasses.
  • Children that are not age appropriate or mature enough to know the importance of following the viewing guidelines should not be permitted to view the eclipsed sun.

Health Reminders
Hand Hygiene: Please emphasize the importance of regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Encourage your students to wash their hands.

Stay Home When Sick: If you are not feeling well, please stay home. It's crucial that we all work together to prevent the spread of illness. You should only return to school when they are symptom-free and have received clearance from a healthcare professional.

Lent at JPII
Join us for Team Lent!
Believe it or not, Lent is right around the corner!  Ash Wednesday is Wednesday February 14th, and all are welcome to join us for mass that day at 10:00am in the gym to kickoff the season of Lent!

Additionally, we are continuing the tradition we started last year at JPII with a program called Team Lent!

What is Team Lent, you ask?

It’s a way to…
  • Get encouragement from others to grow spiritually
  • Hold yourself and others accountable for our different Lenten goals
  • Unite our community in prayer for one another on our journey to holiness

Do you ever feel like you need a little help from others to finish the Lenten goals you set for yourself?  Could you use a little extra prayer and support from the Cardinal Family?  And would you like to help support others too?  Then Team Lent might be right for you!

You may have heard of the three pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.

Team Lent is a way to help you set goals in each of those areas and to help one another stay strong with your resolutions!

Here’s how it works:

Sign up using the google form below
You’ll be added to the email list for Team Lent and receive an email once a week with encouragement and resources to help you in your Lenten journey. You’ll get invited to special gatherings, masses, confession and adoration opportunities throughout Lent! You can even partner up with someone to be your “Lent Buddy,” someone you can check in with throughout Lent to help you both with accountability and encouragement!

Sign ups are due by Ash Wednesday, February 14th!  We hope you can join us and make this the BEST LENT EVER!

NAEP Exam
John Paul II High School has been selected to represent private schools across the
nation by participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Thursday, February 15, 2024. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in public and private schools know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is different from state and school assessments because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. It is administered by the National Center for Education
Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public. Students will take a mathematics, reading, or science assessment. In addition to subject-area questions, students voluntarily complete a NAEP survey questionnaire. The questionnaire provides valuable information about participating students' educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and outside of the classroom.

The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, which includes transition time, directions, and completion of survey questions.

The following 50 students were randomly selected to take the NAEP on Thursday, February 15th at 9:30 AM. They will be in the Senior Presentation Hall.

OU Surveys
Please take some time to complete the OU Capacity Survey sent to you directly from the Catholic Schools Office. The survey will close on February 16th.

Updates are in LAVENDER!

Valentine Sing-A-Grams
Dear teachers, next Wednesday, in addition to Ash Wednesday, we will be having our annual Sing-A-Grams delivered. As to not disturb your important tests, lessons, etc., we've made a Google form where you can request that we NOT deliver them. Please fill out THIS FORM when we should and should not stop by your classroom. Thank you!

Visitor Procedure Update
All - as we have now completed a significant security upgrade in the receptionists area, please understand how this will work:
As we have mentioned before, please notify Lisa and myself of any appointment you have scheduled with a parent/vendor.
When your visitor(s) arrive, 2 things are going to happen. First is we will ask your visitor to remain in the vestibule and Second we will notify you of your visitor.
You will need to come down and escort your visitor while they are on campus.
Please escort them to your meeting space and escort them back down when your meeting is over.
We will no longer just “send them to where you are”. This is a MAJOR security/safety issue.
Please know we need your help to make this successful. As a reminder, all visitors on campus should have their “sticky” badge on at all times.
